Mr. H. M. Issa, the esteemed founder and director of Rúhíyyih School, was recently honoured with the prestigious "Francis Fanthome Lifetime Achievement Award" by the West Bengal chapter of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations board. The award recognizes Mr. Issa's outstanding contributions to education, his unwavering commitment to service, and his dedication to promoting equality, diversity, and justice.
In 1985, together with his wife, Mr. Issa established Rúhíyyih School in Jorebunglow, near Ghoom, in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India. The school was named in honour of Madam Rúhíyyih Rabbáni, a renowned advocate for education and humanitarian service. Since its inception, Rúhíyyih School has remained dedicated to providing a transformative educational experience that nurtures the physical, intellectual, spiritual, and moral growth of each student.
Rúhíyyih School's guiding principles revolve around equality and unity, character and knowledge cultivation, dynamic learning environments, empowering future generations, and promoting global citizenship and service. At the heart of the school's philosophy is character development, with a focus on virtues such as truthfulness, honesty, kindness, justice, and resilience.
The school strives to foster a dynamic learning environment that stimulates intellectual curiosity and a love for learning. Its comprehensive academic curriculum covers a wide range of subjects in the arts and sciences, encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills among its students.
Rúhíyyih School also places a strong emphasis on social responsibility. Through service-learning projects and community engagement, students are instilled with a deep sense of empathy and are encouraged to positively impact both their own lives and the lives of others. Over the years, Rúhíyyih School has played a significant role in uplifting the Jorebunglow, Ghoom, and surrounding communities by providing quality education and empowering individuals to become successful global citizens in fields such as nursing, law, business, medicine, and engineering.
Now, at 70 years old, Mr. Issa remains an enthusiastic cyclist, exploring the deeper woods, streams, and mountains. His active lifestyle contributes to his fitness, enabling him to continue guiding students and educators alike. Mr. Issa's commitment to empathy and his belief in the dignity of every human being resonates with Audrey Hepburn's quote: "Nothing is more important than empathy for another human being's suffering. Not a career. Not wealth. Not intelligence. Certainly not status. We have to feel for one another if we're going to survive with dignity."
Rúhíyyih School takes immense pride in celebrating the recognition bestowed upon Mr. H. M. Issa for his extraordinary contributions to education, service, and the promotion of equality and unity. His visionary leadership has paved the way for compassionate and successful individuals who embrace their roles as global citizens and actively contribute to society's betterment.
